A Saint For Social Media Debates

St. Catherine of Alexandria is the patroness of students, teachers, and librarians. Based on her story, however, she should be the patroness of social media debates! Born around 287 A.D. in Alexandria, Egypt, the legend is that Emperor Maxetius brought scholars to debate her regarding Christianity and that, moved by the Holy Spirit, St. Catherine impressed everyone with her eloquence, logic, and knowledge of theology.

Instead of rewarding her for her stellar performance and philosophical wit, she was ordered to be tortured, imprisoned, and later executed. Rather than denounce her faith, she stood firm and received a martyr’s crown.

St. Catherine is a testament to how God can use any person from any walk of life. Her courage, aptitude for theology, and love of God led her not only to heaven, but to fame that would last centuries. When engaged in online or face-to-face dialogue, may we all remember our call to sainthood!
